  1. Community Development Community Development is a purposeful facilitation process ion which the Social Worker assists a community to define, develop and implement its goals. The term "community" refers to both a smaller specifically-focused area such as a hospital unit or a larger geographic area.Community development focuses on the enhancement of community functioning, not reform of major social structures.The practical activities of Community Development include assisting the community to:
  • Identify its needs and objectives
  • Develop confidence and skill in working within the process
  • Identify internal and / or external resources to deal with the process, and
  • Take action

Community Development is a co-operative and collaborative process in which a sense of community is developed or strengthened as goals are pursued. Its outcome is the achievement of community goals.

  1. Critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) is a process utilising both crisis intervention and education strategies, to mitigate or resolve the psychological distress associated with a critical incident.

The core of CISD is the relief of stress following experience of traumatic events and the acceleration of recovery. CISD is a planned and systematic intervention which includes emotional and cognitive processing, normalisation of reactions and provision of information about the effects of traumatic events.

The intervention is provided with groups of clients affected either directly or indirectly by a critical incident.

  1. Health PromotionHealth Promotion is concerned with the prevention of disease and disability and the development of health promotion interventions. Social Work Health Promotion includes:
  • Advocating for health
  • Mediating between differing societal interests in the pursuit of health
  • Working towards health equity through reducing differences in health status
  • Advocating for equity in health provision.

Social Work Health Promotion activities include:

  • Developing public health policies
  • Promoting supportive environments
  • Facilitating and strengthening of community awareness and action
  • Developing personal skills
  • Reorienting of health services towards a health care system which contributes to the pursuit of health.

  1. Health Policy DevelopmentSocial Work Health Policy Development involves a process of influencing decision making regarding health policy. This includes:
  • Direct participation in the process of policy formulation, implementation and review
  • Facilitation of the participation of others in the process of policy formulation, implementation and review.
  1. Service DevelopmentService Development refers to the planned process of developing services to meet an identified gap in service provision.

The tasks involved may include researching needs, collaborating with other service providers and consumer groups, the creation of alliances, lobbying, preparation of funding submissions and political action.

The end result of the process is the establishment of a service which benefits multiple clients and which can be assessed directly by an individual client, a group of clients or by professionals on behalf of their clients.
